Balata Restaurant was awarded the American Express Platinum Fine Dining Award for 2015 during the Johannesburg leg of the competition, held at Thava Indian Restaurant in Midrand. The American Express Platinum Fine Dining Awards pays tribute to the country’s restaurants that consistently achieve excellence, creativity and provide an exquisite fine dining experience.
With menu items such as ostrich and berries salad, and orange braised pork belly with sticky glaze, served with balsamic roasted beetroot, it is easy to see why the judges were impressed.
New criteria were introduced with the judging this year: Aside from being judged by a panel of foodies, restaurants must also accept payment by American Express® card, and honour one dinner reservation (for up to four) by a Platinum Card member who books on the same day.
Balata Restaurant shares the honours with well-established stars such as Bellgables, Roots at Forum Homini, Wombles and Sophia’s Bistro amongst others. Balata Restaurant has become renowned for its wine and food pairing evenings, hosted by Executive Chef Jean-Pierre Siegenthaler.
