The winter school holidays are officially here. We imagine that, for most children, it’s a time of mixed feelings bouncing between the excitement of spending time with BFFs and butterflies in the tummies about the school holidays.

At Guvon Hotels & Spas, we look forward to having the children with their boundless energy and joyful laughter, seeing them have the time of their lives, playing in the gardens or relishing ice creams with colourful sprinkles (yes even in this weather – do kids ever get cold!).  I am sure lots of moms have this love-hate relationship with school holidays, as schools close on 22 June only to reopen again in July, the workforce sighs with relief. On the other hand, moms are getting panicky, especially those that are working moms.

Bush Willow Tented Camp is ideal to book into for that midweek break with the kids and hubby in tow. The small tented camp is built in a sector of Glenburn Lodge which is surrounded by indigenous bush. This tented camp is more glamp than camp as the tents are already there, equipped with beds, a toilet and small kitchen. Even a hot water shower is included. Bring the mountain bikes and do the beginners trail with the kids, or get dad to teach them how to fish in the Blaauwbank Spruit.

Glenburn Lodge & Spa has great facilities that will keep the kids busy on the hotel property and at GlenPalms: A putt-putt course, a dedicated games room, tennis courts, play park and obstacle course. The self-catering chalets provide a friendly family set-up with its own braai facilities and a lovely patio, several overlooking the river frontage.

Should Muldersdrift feel too close to home, instead visit Warthogs Bush Camp. Just over an hour’s drive from Johannesburg and Pretoria on the outskirts of Magalies, this small Bush Camp is pet friendly. If Bonnie and little Clyde are inseparable, this will bring you heaps of joy. Pets stay for free while humans pay a budget-friendly self-catering rate. Warthogs Bush camp is a mere 2 kilometres from Askari Lodge and Spa, and on a Sunday you can watch the two elephants from a distance as they play in the dam in front of the restaurant.
