Guvon Hotels proudly joined the Knitwits of 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela movement three years ago. Since then our enthusiasm has grown for this heartwarming project and blanket contributions tripled, with the last donation this month totaling a whopping 183 blankets.

In December 2013, Zelda la Grange, late former President Nelson Mandela’s trusted assistant, presented Carolyn Steyn, with a challenge: knit, sew or crochet 67 blankets! These blankets would then be distributed to those in need on Mandela Day. One year later Guvon Hotels and Spas got wind of this great idea and picked up the knitting and crochet needles and joined the movement.

Since then, 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day has transformed into what some are calling a  movement that has captured the attention of many South African and international celebrities as well as corporates and “KnitWits for Madiba”  in Australia, Belgium, Canada, Germany, Cyprus, London, the US and India.

Carolyn Steyn and her team took ownership of 183 blankets at the Guvon Hotels head office which was a combined effort from all the hotels in the group as well as Guvon Academy.

And the best part of the day after the staff excitement, the certificate handouts, the plethora of social media pics and hashtags? When Caroline stopped her car just outside our head office and handed one of our blankets to an elderly lady on the side of the road. That’s how we knit a nation together. One blanket at a time.

An empty Xmas stocking must be the worst thing ever if you are still starry-eyed about Father Xmas and all the promises of better things to come.

Help Santa to put an ecstatic smile on the face of a three to six year old child right here in our community, by dropping off a small present at Kloofzicht Lodge next time you pop in for lunch or attend your conference or  year end function.

To fit in with Santa’s timeline and to get all the gifts delivered in time, we kindly request all gifts to be dropped off in the donation box by  Monday 5 December.

Ho-ho-ho. Happy Holidays! (Well, almost)

You are invited to join this incredible initiative, which has become a ”Knitting Revolution for Nelson Mandela”!!  Stitch by stitch, Guvon Hotels & Spas has pledged to assist 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day and are challenging you to make a difference to the lives of those less fortunate, who may not have the comfort of a warm blanket this winter.

Guvon Hotels & Spas  and its hotels will be knitting or crocheting 20 x 20cm squares which will be sewn into medium sized blankets (120 x 160 cm). Each colourful blanket will consist of 6 x 8 squares.

Are you up for the challenge? Last year Guvon Hotels donated over 70 knitted / crochet blankets to this great initiative. This year we are planning on donating even more! So get those knitting or crochet needles ready, grab some wool and start making a difference!

The deadline for submitting finished blankets or 20cm blocks to Guvon Head Office in Randpark Ridge is 30 June 2016.

Any enquiries may be directed to our HR Director Alta Thorpe on alta@guvon.co.za or Tel 011 791 1870.

Askari Game Lodge & Spa calls on you to donate wool!

I don’t get angry or sad at many things, but cruelty to those who can’t defend themselves, makes my blood boil. High up in this category are children and animals. And who bears the brunt of ice cold winters more than the vulnerable? Askari Game Lodge is appealing to all their guests – corporate, leisure and wedding guests, to donate any leftover or even new wool to them.

Accountant Natasha van Rensburg originated the idea at the lodge: “The 67 Blankets for Madiba day which was featured on Carte Blanche, seems like such a brilliant initiative that we decided to fully support this. We want to take it even further. Not only will all staff be knitting their blocks for the charity blankets on Madiba day, but we will continue knitting throughout the year and donate blankets to our surrounding orphanages, schools and charities.”

Askari Lodge previously donated over 60 scarves knitted by the staff for Soweto schools, as part of the GlaxoSmithKline, “Scarves for Schools” challenge. The Guvon Hotel group donated over 250 scarves in total to this good cause.

Author Martha Waterman shares her wisdom in the art of knitting: “Given good yarn, good workmanship, and good care, a knitted shawl can outlive its knitter, providing warmth and pleasure to several generations of family and friends.”

Just what the doctor ordered for those cold winter days and nights.

Wool may also be dropped off at The Guvon Hotels head office in Randpark: Guvon House, cnr of Kelly and Bosbok Roads

Never before has our hotel group embraced a winter charity challenge, like the one knitting itself out in the hotels #atGuvon. Med Lemon thought it would be a good idea to knit a plethora of scarves for school kids in Soweto for the chilly winter days. Not one to shy away from challenges as huge as the building of Noah’s ark, they soon set a challenge/dare system in place.

Low behold, one cold morning a message popped up on the Guvon Hotels Facebook page: Indaba Hotel bets us that we cant knit 100 scarves! Never one to say no to a challenge from a competitor hotel, the game was on. In return, Guvon Hotels challenged Avianto and Misty Hills… and so the battle of the knitting needles began.

With a deadline of mid May looming, hotel staff  are knitting up a navy blue, woolly storm. Our sincere thanks to Askari Lodge & Spa, and especially the manly game rangers and Metro men in reception for embracing this challenge with so much enthusiasm. As they say: “It takes balls to knit!”

Visit our Guvon Hotels Facebook page for loads of fun pics as the challenge unfolds.
