Royal Elephant Hotel & Conference Centre joins Guvon Signature Collection

Royal elephant compilation 1It started twenty-five years ago with a Scottish themed lodge. Soon after, a five-star fly-fishing haven opened up on the others side of the Swartkops Mountain in Muldersdrift. Next the sound of pinging golf balls and roaring lions were added to this ever-growing portfolio. What does Guvon Hotels and Spas have up their sleeve next? Something with a distinct Moroccan flavour, it seems.

In line with CEO Kosie Pansegrouw’s vision of creating niche products in prime locations and places of outstanding natural beauty, Guvon Hotels and Spas are known for its innovation, constant improvement and sustained passion for the hospitality industry, through the dedicated effort of its dynamic team. Adding Royal Elephant with its unique Moroccan theme fits like a hand in glove, adding substance to this vision of offering leisure, corporate and wedding guests something different and a cut above the rest.

The deadline for submitting finished blankets or 20cm blocks to Guvon Head Office in Randpark Ridge is 30 June 2016.

I can imagine that a bunch of guys are busy giving themselves peptalks, with Valentines just a few days away: “Yes you can do it. Ask her. It’s now or never!” Or perhaps being a leap year the Cinderella slipper is on the other foot. I know a bunch of gutsy girls and I have faith in you: Just do it!

“Being committed to your sport and a demanding working lifestyle sometimes calls for a treat. As a full time employee, competitive cyclist and sportsman, I like to invest in my sport and subsequent recovery and make some time for proper relaxation”, says mountainbiker Armand du Toit.

Armand was on his way to Glenburn Lodge & Spa to see what the Chicama Spa Cyclist Treat package entails.

Glenburn Spa (previously known as Chicama Spa) offers a Cyclist Spa treat which includes a 30min steam room session to relax the sore muscles, a 30 min back, neck and shoulder treatment as well as a 50min Circulavine Leg treatment.

Glenburn Lodge & Spa has just opened two mountain biking routes on its property. The circular routes start and end at the universal sports field close the Glenburn Lodges entrance. Both scenic routes are just under 5km and takes the rider along the grass fields, mountain and riverside.

Armand enjoyed the steam room and Swedish back massage which is part of the Cyclist Spa package, but the 50 minute CirculaeVine leg treatment stood out above the rest: “I can definitely refer to this treatment as a full body relaxation and recovery session, which I would definitely recommend to any cyclist, sportsman or woman!”

“The specialised CirculaeVine invigorating foot and leg treatment uses manual lymphatic drainage techniques: The feet and legs are wrapped in a circulation-booster gel, followed by a hydrating body lotion. A perfect treatment to help relax and relieve tired or aching legs and a definite for anyone who participated in the 947 cycle challenge or does weekend races or leisure rides,” says Spa Manager Geraldine Veldman.

The Cradle of Humankind has become a popular cycling and training area with several routes and bike facilities in the area. The 43km Cradle of Humankind loop is a scenic route and goes past the Rhino and Lion Park. describes the terrain as hilly with a lot of downhills to recover. The Cradle to Caves cycling trail has cycling lanes which makes it a safe option. The 37km ride should take one to two hours depending on your speed.

According to Bloomberg, 8 out of 10 entrepreneurs who start businesses fail within the first 18 months. A staggering 80% just don’t make it.  Given the rather gloomy statistics for small to medium sizes businesses, it is no small accomplishment for Glenburn Lodge to celebrate its 25th birthday this month amongst start-up family members, previous general managers of the property, neighbours, staff who have worked at the lodge from day one, business and media. Chicama Spa simultaneously celebrated their 10th birthday on the day with a fashion show and celebrity line-up.

Guvon Investments (Pty) Ltd was established in 1978 by Mr Gustav Pansegrouw. Oom Gustav, as he is fondly referred to, handed over reins to his four children who are all involved in the business. While Kosie Pansegrouw acts as Managing Director, Alta Thorpe heads up HR, Yvette Alberts the financial side and Jannie Borman the estate and maintenance. The name GUVON originated from the combination of the names of its founder members Gustav and his late wife, Yvonne.

Involved in property development from inception, Guvon started development in the hotel industry with Glenburn Lodge as the first of now seven hotels/properties in their portfolio. In 1990, Glenburn Lodge, situated in ‘The Cradle of Humankind’, was opened as an intimate family weekend getaway. Additions to the original buildings and facilities were carried out every year thereafter and Glenburn Lodge soon developed into one of the leading Conference and Country Hotel venues in Gauteng today, with focused banqueting venues and facilities to cater for weddings and functions, as well as recreational activities for all age groups.

25 years later the lodge has 100 rooms, a magnificent Spa and a tented camp.

During a day of festivities, commemorative tree planting, delicious snacks by in-house Belgian Chef Vincent Lauwers and super entertainment by George Meiring, Managing Director, Kosie Pansegrouw unveiled the new Glenburn Lodge & Spa logo. “We felt that this is an opportune time to introduce a fresh logo”, says Group Marketing and PR Manager Christa Badenhorst. “The majestic Zwartkops Mountain forms a focal point for the logo design.  Throughout history, mountains have symbolized constancy, firmness and stillness. The Blaauwbank Spruit is pictured on the logo as it flows into the main dam”.

“The blue colour spectrum used in the logo implies professionalism, serious mindedness, integrity, sincerity and calmness – all qualities we associate with Glenburn Lodge and its parenting company Guvon Hotels. Blue is also associated with authority and success. The mountains and river are encased in a circle suggesting community, friendship, love, relationships and unity. Rings have an implication of marriage and partnership – a very apt reference to Glenburn Lodge which was one of the first wedding venues in Muldersdrift.”

New Glenburn Lodge and Spa logo

Previous General Managers Dave Atherstone and Leon Bosch were welcomed on the day by the current GM Nigel Peel. While Mr Bosch was in His Guvon head office attire where he fulfils the role of Operations and Marketing Director for the Guvon Hotels & Spas group, Mr Atherstone proudly wore his red chequered tie and name badge from the early Glenburn Lodge days.

Glenburn Lodge is blessed with staff members who are still with the company since the day it opened its doors to the public. Johannes Mashatola, Jechonia Zulu and Jabulani Mchunu have 25 years of service, with Sarah Phiri with 23 years of service.

Oom Gustav Pansegrouw and actress Cindy Swanepoel (Ballade vir n enkeling) got down and dirty with a tree planting ceremony, while Guvon Hotels Horticulturist Wayne Otto and Wayne Stafford (Finalist Bachelor 2015) offered a helping hand in the process. 25 certificates were handed over to celebrities, management and staff who assisted in the tree planting process.

Mr Leon Bosch did the honours in cutting the 25th birthday cake, bringing the celebrations to a close.

No traffic congestion, ample free parking, free Wi-Fi just 30 min from Sandton in the Cradle of Humankind .

Sandton traffic

Sandton inner city road closures in October coincides with the launch of a real time, online booking system for all self-catering  units within the Guvon Hotels & Spa group. Aside from taking the headache out of getting to and from your business or holiday destination, (which will be prevalent in Sandton for October) the easy online booking process makes Muldersdrift and the Cradle of Humankind the destination of choice in October.

Guvon Hotels recently made a move into the self-catering market, taking heed of the need for family orientated getaways where preparing own meals in your own time is of essence. The online rates include breakfast, while other meals are self-catering. Even though the self-catering units are largely aimed at families, it may also be utilised for business groups traveling together.

Glenburn Lodge has been the forerunner with two and three bedroom self -catering units, set along the Blaauwbank and Crocodile Rivers in Muldersdrift. This popular family lodge offers wedding, conference and year end facilities in addition to its excellent nature orientated recreational activities. Set in a small private game reserve, game viewing, bird watching, walking trails, putt-putt and several swimming pools are perfect for family stays.

The upmarket Fairway Hotel, Spa & Golf Resort now offers online bookings for the self-catering garden villas, at Randpark Golf Course. A fully equipped kitchen and braai facilities on a wooden deck overlooking the golf course, makes this a very popular choice with golfing groups.

For those with a love affair with the Big 5, the online availability for self-catering units at Askari Game Lodge & Spa in Magaliesburg comes as a huge bonus. A few clicks later and your family unit overlooking the Magalies Mountain range is booked and you can start packing for Big 5 game drives and elephant interaction on the property.

Kloofzicht Lodge’s latest addition, the exclusive Royal Suite is also available online for those high-end executive meetings or romantic getaways, requiring the presence of a butler of personal chef. Overlooking the mountain and gorge, this Suite is surrounded with a private terraced garden with entertainment areas, a heated eight seater Jacuzzi and several vantage points for game and bird watching. A large fire pit invites guest to conclude their day with the sounds of nocturnal night life surrounding them.

Online bookings for self-catering units can be made directly from or the individual hotel websites. Any enquiries may be directed to Reta Coetzee and her Central Reservations team on 08611 48866.

All self-catering units are also available as holiday ownership options, in partnership with Beekman Managed Portfolio (BMP) – a collection of top end resort developments. Details about this unique ownership opportunity  is available on the Guvon Hotels website.

IMKA’S 5 TIPS ON CHOSING A WEDDING VENUE. Imka Bester recently held her dream wedding at Glenburn Lodge in Muldersdrift and as a lifestyle blogger she shares some invaluable advice on chosing your perfect wedding venue. On her blog she shares her beautiful day, complete with stunning photos taken by Christo Van Deventer Photography.

Imka Bester Glenburn wedding

  • Consider the size of the venue. Even though the venue says max capacity is 120, consider whether your guests will be squeezed into a venue and will fit chock-en-blok soos sardyntjies. I suggest booking a venue with a larger capacity to ensure the guests have enough space to move around and be comfortable.
  • What is the rental fee and what is included in this rental fee. Allow extra money in your budget if extra decor needs to be arranged.
  • Can I hold my ceremony there too? At Glenburn, they have a beautiful chapel with the most stunning view of the mountains!
  • Is there enough parking for guests?
  • Ensure that the guests can access the venue with ease. If your guests need to cross a river and a 4×4 to access the site, you will be left with guests either not attending, or a bunch of grumpy guests with ruined shoes and outfits.

Imka Bester wedding at Glenburn-Lodge-

“The service we received from the staff on the day was nothing but spectacular, says Ms Bester. “From a delicious breakfast buffet to someone attending to us hand and foot, ensuring we had something to eat before the ceremony and that our room was beautiful and clean after the wedding. Our room was decorated with red rose petals, a lovely arrangement with stunning red roses, a bottle of champagne and plates filled with food! I even received a mini survival kit for those bridal emergencies and I only had to use it on my bridesmaids!”

Glenburn Lodge has a Belgium chef  and Ms Bester loved the way he prepared their wedding feast: “John and I decided to take time to eat the food at the wedding and we were not disappointed. The Kingklip was the best I have ever had and our guests’s plates were overflowing with seconds, and some even going back for thirds! The desserts were delicious too and I can honestly say that I had dessert seconds and thirds and fourths.”

We wish Imka and John all the blessings in the world for their future together!
